23 जनवरी 1897 का दिन विश्व इतिहास में स्वर्णाक्षरों में अंकित है। इस दिन स्वतंत्रता आंदोलन के महानायक सुभाषचंद्र बोस का जन्म कटक के प्रसिद्ध वकील जानकीनाथ तथा प्रभावतीदेवी के यहां हुआ।

उनके पिता ने अंगरेजों के दमनचक्र के विरोध में 'रायबहादुर' की उपाधि लौटा दी। इससे सुभाष के मन में अंगरेजों के प्रति कटुता ने घर कर लिया। अब सुभाष अंगरेजों को भारत से खदेड़ने व भारत को स्वतंत्र कराने का आत्मसंकल्प ले, चल पड़े राष्ट्रकर्म की राह पर।

आईसीएस की परीक्षा में उत्तीर्ण होने के बाद सुभाष ने आईसीएस से इस्तीफा दिया। इस बात पर उनके पिता ने उनका मनोबल बढ़ाते हुए कहा- 'जब तुमने देशसेवा का व्रत ले ही लिया है, तो कभी इस पथ से विचलित मत होना।'

दिसंबर 1927 में कांग्रेस के राष्ट्रीय महासचिव के बाद 1938 में उन्हें कांग्रेस का राष्ट्रीय अध्यक्ष चुना गया। उन्होंने कहा था - मेरी यह कामना है कि महात्मा गांधी के नेतृत्व में ही हमें स्वाधीनता की लड़ाई लड़ना है। हमारी लड़ाई केवल ब्रिटिश साम्राज्यवाद से नहीं, विश्व साम्राज्यवाद से है। धीरे-धीरे कांग्रेस से सुभाष का मोह भंग होने लगा।

16 मार्च 1939 को सुभाष ने अपने पद से इस्तीफा दे दिया। सुभाष ने आजादी के आंदोलन को एक नई राह देते हुए युवाओं को संगठित करने का प्रयास पूरी निष्ठा से शुरू कर दिया। इसकी शुरुआत 4 जुलाई 1943 को सिंगापुर में 'भारतीय स्वाधीनता सम्मेलन' के साथ हुई।

5 जुलाई 1943 को 'आजाद हिन्द फौज' का विधिवत गठन हुआ। 21 अक्टूबर 1943 को एशिया के विभिन्न देशों में रहने वाले भारतीयों का सम्मेलन कर उसमें अस्थायी स्वतंत्र भारत सरकार की स्थापना कर नेताजी ने आजादी प्राप्त करने के संकल्प को साकार किया।

12 सितंबर 1944 को रंगून के जुबली हॉल में शहीद यतीन्द्र दास के स्मृति दिवस पर नेताजी ने अत्यंत मार्मिक भाषण देते हुए कहा- 'अब हमारी आजादी निश्चित है, परंतु आजादी बलिदान मांगती है। आप मुझे खून दो, मैं आपको आजादी दूंगा।' यही देश के नौजवानों में प्राण फूंकने वाला वाक्य था, जो भारत ही नहीं विश्व के इतिहास में स्वर्णाक्षरों में अंकित है।

16 अगस्त 1945 को टोक्यो के लिए निकलने पर ताइहोकु हवाई अड्डे पर नेताजी का विमान दुर्घटनाग्रस्त हो गया और स्वतंत्र भारत की अमरता का जयघोष करने वाला, भारत मां का दुलारा सदा के लिए, राष्ट्रप्रेम की दिव्य ज्योति जलाकर अमर हो गया।

The day of 23 January 1897 is inscribed in the golden letters in world history. On this day, Subhash Chandra Bose, the great hero of the freedom movement, was born to famous lawyer Jankinath of Cuttack and Prabhavatidevi.

His father returned the title 'Raibahadur' in protest against the repression of the British. Due to this, bitterness towards English took home in Subhash's mind. Now, Subhash takes a self-determination to drive the British out of India and make India independent, on the path of nationalism.

Subhash resigned from ICS after passing the ICS examination. On this, his father boosted his morale and said - 'When you have already taken the fast of service, do not ever deviate from this path.'

He was elected the National President of the Congress in 1938, after the National General Secretary of the Congress in December 1927. He had said - I wish that we have to fight for freedom under the leadership of Mahatma Gandhi. Our fight is not only with British imperialism, but with world imperialism. Gradually, Subhash's fascination with the Congress began to dissolve.

On 16 March 1939, Subhash resigned from his post. Subhash started the effort to organize the youth with full devotion, giving a new path to the freedom movement. It began on 4 July 1943 with the 'Indian Independence Conference' in Singapore.

The 'Azad Hind Fauj' was duly formed on 5 July 1943. On 21 October 1943, Netaji realized his resolve to achieve independence by organizing a group of Indians living in different countries of Asia and setting up a temporary independent Government of India.

On 12 September 1944, at the Jubilee Hall, Rangoon, on the memorial day of the martyr Yatindra Das, Netaji gave a very poignant speech - 'Now our freedom is sure, but freedom demands sacrifice. You give me blood, I will give you freedom. ' This was the sentence to blow the life of the youth of the country, which is mentioned in the golden letters not only in India but in the history of the world.

On 16 August 1945, Netaji's plane crashed at Taihoku Airport upon leaving for Tokyo, and the Mother India cherished for ever, immortalized by burning the divine flame of the nation's love.
