Early life and education

Bhuvan Bam was born in Delhi[2] into a Bengali family and was raised in Kolkata. He has two brothers named Ambarish and Yogesh.[3] His father, a doctor by profession, died when he was five years old.[4] Bam has mentioned that his late father "started developing a curiosity towards gadgets" when he was nine and bought a Wii and a TV.[5] His mother is a manager at one of his father's clinics.[6] When he was 17 years old, Bam moved to the United States to pursue his Masters degree in computer science from City University of New York.[3] He returned to India and joined the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research as a researcher.[7]

Career

Bam began his YouTube channel, BB Ki Vines, in May 2014.[4] The videos are compilation videos created by BB with various characters that represent Bam's friends and family members.[8] BB, the channel's creator, is also known for his laugh, a high-pitched, sarcastic laugh.[9]

The channel made its way to the number 2 most subscribed comedy channels in India, surpassing the channel from Kumar Sangakkara, and the channel's "Sirf Tum" parody video became the third most viewed YouTube video in India, after the original video and Psy's Gangnam Style.[10][11] In December 2014, Bam was in the list of the top ten most subscribed and liked YouTube channels in the country, alongside Carla Damm and Hardik Pandya.[12] On 5 August 2015, BB Ki Vines was ranked third in the list of top seven most subscribed comedy channels in the world.[13]

Bam published his book titled Panditji, published by Hind Publishing Company in November 2015. The book was a light-hearted look at his life in Kolkata. He received many accolades for the book including the International Book of the Year Award.[14][15]

In 2017, BB Ki Vines went live on Facebook.

In January 2018, Bam's friend and associate, Prince Saif, passed away in a road accident while riding a motorcycle. He dedicated a video to him.[17]

In April 2018, Bhuvan became the first individual YouTube content creator to cross 10 million subscribers on the site. On 14 July 2018, he reached his 14 millionth subscriber, becoming the fastest to do so. He surpassed Dhoni on 15 July and is now the number one Indian YouTube channel by subscriber count.[18][19]

On 21 July 2018, Bam set a Guinness World Record for the highest jump on a trampoline with a soccer ball (48.3m).[20][21]

Personal life

In 2018, Bam bought a Honda City car for his mother, one laptop for his mother and three DSLRs for his friends.[22]

Acting career

Bam co-produced and starred in the 2016 Bengali film Sangharsh with Kamalesh Sharma.[23]

Controversies

In December 2015, media reported that Bam deleted a YouTube video named #StopDrinkingCoke. The video was directed by Bam and was posted in reaction to a viral video of Aditya Narayan from the 2015 music video of the same name. In the viral video, Narayan insulted Coca-Cola and urged people to stop drinking Coke and Sprite. He received considerable backlash from his fans and industry members.[24][25] On January 2, 2016, Bam posted a video titled #AddHoBar in response to the controversy.[26] He had earlier posted a video named #AlternativeJobsInJaiHind in November 2015.[27]

Clips and skits of his family and friends are often featured on his YouTube channel. In 2015, Bam visited his mother and family in Mumbai to shoot for his first music video, titled "Baby" (2015).[
In March 2016, Bam faced another controversy. Along with comedian Nishigandha Wad, Bam co-produced a video titled #TickledButNotScared which parodied the hit viral video Tickled produced by prankster Adam Saleh. The video, which was uploaded by Wad on YouTube, featured a sub-titled voice over by Bam, claiming his own experiences while working in the entertainment industry as comic relief.[28] An Indian version of the video also went viral on social media and received a lot of criticism. The video was immediately removed from YouTube and Facebook.[29]
